Dusheti Farmers’ House in Aragvispiri, Ambrolauri Farmers’ House in town Ambrolauri, Aspindza Farmers’ House in borough Aspindza and Shuakhevi Farmers’ House in borough Shuakhevi have started functioning since January 2005 through support of IFAD program and Mountain Area Development International MADI. The aim of Farmers’ Houses is to overcome rural poverty and improve economic conditions in the pilot and non-pilot villages. Meetings and trainings about agricultural activities and improvement methods were conducted for rayon and village population in the Farmers’ Houses. In one of the pilot rayons of IFAD program – Aspindza, fruit production was one of the main sources of income for local population. According to statistics of 90th, around 900 ha area was occupied by perennial crops, where around 3 thousand tones of fruit was produced. Fruit processing line was opened in the rayon as well as cannery in Akhalkalaki.Usage of low-quality pesticides and broken irrigation have reduced qualitative as well as quantitative indicators of the production. Support to beekeeping within Rural development program for mountainous and highland areas of Georgia has started in all four pilot rayons since 2004. At the beginning, the beekeepers’ associations have been established, demonstrative apiaries were selected where trainings/demonstrations of modern beekeeping methods and technologies take place. The program creates all necessary conditions for production of ecologically safe honey.

Viticulture is one of the old and perspective branches in Shuakhevi. Since 90th of the previous century, due to famous events, viticulture had influenced a big degradation among other agricultural branches. Vineyards have been demolished and were changed with crops and vegetables essential for living.

Crops production

Crops production covers the following agricultural cultures such as potato, wheat, vegetable (by selection), barley, sainfoin, buckwheat and maize within the pilot rayons of Dusheti, Aspindza, Ambrolauri and Shuakhevi of Rural Development program for Mountainous and Highland areas of Georgia.

For all four rayons, it is estimated to produce certified seed potato on total 32 ha areas.

A new orchard was not established in Aspindza for 10 years.On average around 0.21 ha perennial plant was coming for one household, minimal 0.09 ha and maximum 0.30 ha. During past 10 years, the perennial plant areas have decreased twice and yield by 3 times.

Vineyards have been demolished and were changed with crops and vegetables essential for living.

The revival of viticulture in Shuakhevi rayon have been influenced by the supporting project for viticulture within Rural development program for Mountainous and highland areas of Georgia which is practically carried out by Mountain Area Development International. It includes planting of Chkhavery variety grapevines on 3.5 ha area of different micro-ecological zones.
